Diabetes: The number of Americans with diabetes rises to 25.8 million

Nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) new estimates.   Further, an estimated 79 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be  considered diabetes.  Prediabetes raises a person’s risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Diabetes affects 8.3 percent of all Americans, and 11.3 percent of adults aged 20 years and older, according to the 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet.  About 27 percent of those with diabetes – 7 million Americans – do not know they have the disease.  Prediabetes affects 35 percent of adults aged 20 years and older. THE POSITION: The Wellness and Physical Activity Coordinator will lead and direct statewide work site wellness and physical activity programs including the administration of more than $500,000 in local contracts for physical activity programs, develop effective collaborative efforts with internal and external partners to promote physical activity, utilize public health data to develop and prioritize policy and community-based interventions to promote physical activity and work-site wellness, translate physical activity guidelines and recommendation to inform, and serve as a technical expert in the are of exercise physiology and related exercise science in public health setting.
