Cancer Prevention Study Seeks Participants

August 23, 2013

The American Cancer Society’s Epidemiology Research Program is inviting men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 years who have no personal history of cancer to join a historic research study, Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). The ultimate goal is to enroll at least 300,000 adults from various racial/ethnic backgrounds from across the U.S. The purpose of CPS-3 is to better understand the lifestyle, behavioral, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer and to ultimately eliminate cancer as a major health problem for this and future generations.   CPS-3 is a grassroots effort across the country through which you can advance cancer research by participating actively in a historic research study.

Participation is easy and enrollment is being brought to <area> in partnership with <host>.  Once you schedule your appointment, you will receive instructions on how to complete your first, most comprehensive survey online. This survey will take approximately 45-60 minutes to complete.

Your onsite enrollment will take approximately 20-30 minutes and will involve:

•        Completing a short survey packet

•        Signing a consent form

•        Providing a waist circumference measurement

•        Providing a small blood sample (similar to a doctor’s visit).

Enrollment will take place in Tucson and in the Phoenix Metro area over the next several months.  Following enrollment, you will receive mailed surveys at home every few years to update your information. You will also receive annual study newsletters to update you on research results. Whether or not you are able to enroll, please forward this email to friends, coworkers, and family members in Arizona and encourage them to help advance cancer research by enrolling in CPS-3.  For more information about CPS-3, please visit www.cancer.org/cps3 or email cps3@cancer.org or call toll-free 1.888-604-5888.

Grantmakers In Aging Receives $1.3 million from the Pfizer Foundation to Boost ‘Age-friendly’ Communities

Community AGEnda program to help America’s towns and cities prepare  for a growing older population

New York, NY/Washington, DC (October 30, 2012) ― In partnership with the Pfizer Foundation, Grantmakers In Aging (GIA), a national association of funders, today launched Community AGEnda: Improving America for All Ages, announcing five grants of $150,000 each to local groups in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, and the greater Kansas City area to accelerate their efforts to become “age-friendly” – that is, great places to grow up and grow old.

“The aging of America’s population is one of the most important trends of the 21st century, with tremendous implications for our future, our health, our economy and our quality of life,” said Caroline Roan, President of the Pfizer Foundation. “By partnering with Grantmakers In Aging, we believe we can promote health and wellness, advance the important national conversation around aging and help our communities take tangible steps to prepare for these huge demographic changes.”

America is getting older fast. Today, 40 million people in the United States are ages 65 and older, and this number is projected to more than double to 89 million by 2050. Yet most cities, towns and regions are not preparing to take advantage of the opportunities — and meet the challenges — presented by a growing number of older adults.

“Research tells us that most people want to grow old in the places that matter most to them, around family and community,” said John Feather, PhD, CEO of Grantmakers In Aging. “But that’s only going to be possible if all of us — regional planners, elected officials, citizen groups, philanthropies, industry and others — start thinking and taking action now to put age-friendly ideas into practice. Supporting age-friendly development is a natural role for local philanthropies because of their unique knowledge of the people and particular needs of their own regions.” Read the rest of this entry »

Wayne Tormala Gives a Prostate Cancer Update

September 26, 2012

Dear friends,

Back in early February, I announced that I had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and that I had decided to take a public stance with regards to my diagnosis, the course of my treatment, and the eventual outcomes.  This decision would hopefully help leverage my new-found status as a testimony to the importance of screening, timely detection, and disease management.

In consort with KTAR and the Arizona Diamondbacks, we launched a personal blog at www.prostatepledge.com   encouraging Arizona men to make a pledge to get their prostate exam and be eligible to win private suites at an Arizona Diamondbacks games.  To date over 3000 men have taken the prostate pledge. In addition, we received considerable media coverage, spoke at prostate cancer awareness events, and highlighted prostate cancer during National Men’s Health Week in June.

At this time, I’m very pleased to announce that my follow-up prostate tests have indicated that my treatment was a resounding success!   I have been symptom-free, and experienced only minimal fatigue during the course of my nine weeks of treatment.

Please know that I have appreciated the support and kind messages from folks who have known about my circumstance.  Also, it has been most rewarding to receive many messages from men and women across Arizona testifying to their personal decisions to get screened, support their loved ones, and spread the word about the ease of testing and range of treatment options for those who detect cancer.  Indeed, we achieved an impact far beyond the 3,000+  people who made the official pledge.

Together, we are living proof that life’s challenges can not only be met, but can make us even stronger.

Best to you,

Wayne
